The American Red Cross LGI Recertification
The American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification Course is designed to recertify Lifeguard Instructors. Class meets May 9 and 10, 8 am- 6 pm both days in Williston, ND, at the ARC pool.
Please bring towels, snacks, a water bottle (no glass on deck), a pen/pencil, a notepad, and either a hardback or digital copy of the LGI manual. Participants will receive their teaching assignments 1 week prior to the start of the class.
The Lifeguarding Instructor course online session: ■ Provides instructor candidates with essential knowledge about the Red Cross and the Lifeguarding program. ■ Introduces instructor candidates to teaching strategies and techniques they will use when teaching courses and modules in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program. ■ Helps instructor candidates to prepare for the in-person sessions. ■ Provides an overview of the Red Cross Learning Center and administrative procedures instructors must follow when delivering American Red Cross training. ■ Contains the American Red Cross Instructor Agreement and Instructor Code of Conduct, which instructor candidates must read and agree to in order to teach American Red Cross courses. ■ Contains a 20-question final exam. Instructor candidates are required to complete all elements of the online session prior to attending the first in-person session of the Lifeguarding Instructor course
During the in-person sessions, instructor candidates will: ■ Complete a prerequisite skill assessment scenario. ■ Complete a skill practice and polish session, demonstrating skills to the standard. ■ Participate in small group and reciprocal practice teaching activities. ■ Conduct two individual practice teaching assignments. ■ Become familiar with using the instructor and participant resources that support the Lifeguarding program, including the Red Cross Learning Center. The Lifeguarding Instructor course in-person session includes the following: ■ Precourse Session ■ Lesson 1: Training Lifeguards ■ Lesson 2: Teaching Activities––Part 1 ■ Lesson 3: Teaching Activities––Part 2 ■ Lesson 4: Administering Courses and Closing
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor course is to train instructor candidates to teach the basic-level courses and modules in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program.
Prerequisites
Be at least 17 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the Lifeguarding Instructor course.
■ Possess a current basic-level certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid.
■ Obtain all required instructor and participant course materials before starting the course.
■ Successfully complete the online session of the Lifeguarding Instructor course prior to the precourse session.
■ Successfully complete the prerequisite skill assessment scenario to continue in the course.
Failure to meet any of the prerequisites prohibits an instructor candidate from continuing in the instructor course. The candidate must take the full Lifeguarding Instructor course at a later date after they meet all prerequisites.

We are happy to accommodate life changes as much as possible. Any non-refundable certification fees (e.g., ARC, SGE, SA online class costs) or processing costs are deducted from refunds. The certification fee is $60, and we incur this cost when registering a participant for the online training content. The $60 fee for the online content is good for 12 months and can be applied to a future lifeguard or swimming instructor class. The course fee is non-transferable and must be used by the original participant.
1. Full Refunds
Participants are eligible for a 100% refund if:
They cancel at least 7 days before the first class
The course is canceled by the program
A participant is unable to attend due to documented medical reasons
2. Partial Refunds
50% refund if cancellation occurs 3–6 days before the first class
No refund on or after 48–72 hours before the course begins
3. After the Course Begins
No refunds once the class starts
This includes:
Failure to pass the prerequisite swim tests
Missed classes
Failure to complete the required skills or score a minimum of 80% on the exams
4. Transfers & Credits
One-time transfer to a future class (if requested before start date, the participant's name is the same and the training is the same)
Program credit is valid for 90 days and is based on the current class schedule and availability of training dates. If no training is available, we will use the refund policy that applies to your situation, minus the certification and processing fees.
